M.A.B.B.A. / C.B.B.F. / I.F.B.B.
Manitoba Amateur Bodybuilding Association /
Canadian Bodybuilding Federation / International
Federation of Bodybuilding
The International Federation of Bodybuilding is
the longest standing organization in the world
representing and promoting bodybuilders, and now
fitness competitors. Ben Weider is one of the
founders of the organization, which has a 53-year
history. 173 countries are affiliated with the
I.F.B.B. each country running qualifiers for World
Class I.F.B.B. Professional Competitions such as The
Olympia, The Ironman Pro Invitational Men's
Bodybuilding, Fitness International, Ms.
International Women's Bodybuilding, Arnold Classic
Men's Bodybuilding, Atlantic City Pro Fitness,
Toronto Pro Invitational Men's Bodybuilding, Night
of the Champions Men's Bodybuilding, Fitness World
Pro, and Women's World Pro bodybuilding.
Many of these contests receive TV coverage and are
well represented in most of the bodybuilding and
fitness magazines such as: Flex, Muscle and Fitness,
Oxygen, Ironman, Musclemag, and Hers. In Canada,
each province has a provincial organization.
Manitoba’s Association consists of a President, VP,
Fitness Chair, Secretary/Treasurer and Executive
Director.
The Manitoba provincial association contacts are
as follows:
Each province has qualifying shows for National
Competition. In Manitoba two contests are available
each year - the Novice (Provincial Qualifier) and
the Provincials (National Qualifier).
Currently, in Manitoba the overall Men's, Women's
and Fitness winners from the Provincials will be
eligible for National competition for life. The
first place winner in any weight category in
bodybuilding or height category in Fitness (if
applicable) is eligible to compete only at the next
two Nationals and the next two World Qualifiers. If
a bodybuilder comes in 2nd or 3rd at the Provincials
they are only eligible to compete at the very next
Nationals and the very next World Qualifier.
Once an athlete has qualified to compete at a
National level they may be chosen to represent
Manitoba at:
- 1) The Canadian Nationals - winners may be
offered Pro cards and then may move on to the
pro shows mentioned previously.
- 2) Canadian World Qualifier - winners may be
selected to represent Canada at the IFBB World
Amateur Championships.
NOTE: Random drug testing is done by the Canadian Centre of Ethics (CCES) as arranged by the Canadian Bodybuilding Federation (CBBF) following the competitors weight class or open class.
Athletes who place at a National competition may
qualify to compete in:
- 3) North American Championships - winners of
this show may also qualify to turn pro.
ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING ELIGIBILITY SHOULD BE
DIRECTED TO THE EXECUTIVE WELL BEFORE THE CONTEST
YOU ARE ENTERING!
Please note: There are several other newer
organizations promoting competitions in Canada that
are not affiliated with IFBB/CBBF/MABBA. Rules and
opportunities differ from one organization to the
next - make sure that you are aware of these
differences before you make a decision to compete.
Currently, MABBA is the only organization with an
official executive and a 41-year history in
Manitoba.
Tom Heffner
MABBA President

Welcome to MABBA, I would like to introduce myself,
I am the MABBA President. I have been involved in
bodybuilding since 1969 when almost all of the
bodybuilders in Winnipeg trained at the local YMCA
on Vaughan St in the basement and we had never heard
of Women’s Bodybuilding or Women’s Figure and
Fitness.
My first Mr. Manitoba contest was in 1972.
Prejudging was upstairs in the YMCA and the evening
show was always held in conjunction with the Red
River Ex in June outside the arena on a make shift
stage with the setting sun as our stage lights.
Now look at us we hold our Competitions at Pantages
Theatre or the Manitoba Theatre Centre. We have come
a long way since I started in 1969 with a lot of the
credit going to the past Presidents who have
contributed so much of their personal time and
effort to see that MABBA grew and improved. I can
only hope that my time will also contribute to the
future growth of Bodybuilding, Figures and Fitness
in Manitoba and MABBA.
MABBA is at very exciting crossroads in Manitoba.
The Women’s Figure and Fitness in Manitoba has grown
into a premier event both at the local level and at
a National level.
I have several objectives I will work on as
President. I want to start by getting our young
Figure and Fitness and Bodybuilders out of the gym
and onto the stage with the help of past MABBA
members acting as mentors to help answer the many
questions that must be on their minds when it comes
to committing themselves to their first competition.
I also want to see the Women’s Figure and Fitness
continue to grow into an intricate part of MABBA.
The last thing I want to say is I look forward to
meeting as many MABBA members as I can and get your
contribution in making MABBA the greatest
organization in Canada.

Train hard and stay healthy,

Carrie Carriere
MABBA Vice President
Born and raised in Winnipeg, but made in Barbados, Carrie works her day job at EISI (financial planning software company) then transforms into a gymnastics coach by evening and a personal training on weekends. She coaches Novice, Provincial & National Fitness competitors at Panthers Gymnastics providing them with everything from basic skills to advanced tumbling. She also coaches an Adult Gymnastics class which has been running steady since she introduced the concept into Manitoba in 1992. Carrie has been a Certified Personal Trainer since 1993 and works independently out of her basement gym (that her husband Jason built her). When she finds time outside of all her jobs and volunteer position here with MABBA, Carrie spends most of her time with her friends, family and her two pups, Zayl (7 year old Chocolate Lab) and Taja (3 year old Rottie). The Fitness Chicks are very near and dear to her heart…you know who you are!
Carrie competed in Fitness from 1998-2002; she won the Overall Fitness in MB in 2001 and has been waiting very impatiently to get back on that stage again. She is hoping to grace the stage once again in the upcoming season of 2009…her fingers are crossed!
She has been on the MABBA board for 3 years and dedicates most of her time producing our Novice and Provincial shows and organizing all of our amazing volunteers. All MABBA executives work extremely hard for all of our athletes, volunteers and for those who support them. Our hopes are that everyone who represents MABBA on that stage feels the pride we have for all their hard work and effort that is involved in this sport.
If you would like to contact Carrie about gymnastics, training or any other MABBA concern please contact her at carrieandjay@hotmail.com.
